LNA Quiets Cellular And Satcom Radios

April 24, 2013
This compact low-noise amplifier provides excellent noise figure from 700 to 3800 MHz.

Providing big numbers from a small package, model SKY67151-396LF from is a low-noise amplifier (LNA) from Skyworks Solutions with low noise figure from 700 to 3800 MHz. Ideal for commercial cellular, military communications, and satellite-communications (satcom) applications, it is based on the firm’s pseudomorphic-high-electron-mobility-transistor (pHEMT) enhancement-mode semiconductor technology. Supplied in a 2 x 2 mm, 8-pin dual-flat-no-lead (DFN) package, it runs on supplies of +3 to +5 VDC from 30 to 100 mA.

When measured in an evaluation board (including the loss of the board), the noise figure ranges from 0.25 dB at 849 MHz to 0.7 dB at 3.6 GHz, with typical noise figure of 0.5 dB at 2.5 GHz. The small-signal gain is typically 19 dB at 2.5 GHz, with as much as 26 dB gain at 1 GHz. The miniature amplifier achieves a typical input-third-order-intercept point (IIP3) of +17 dBm at 2.5 GHz and typical output-third-order-intercept point (OIP3) of +36 dBm at 2.5 GHz. The typical 1-dB compression point is +2 dBm at 2.5 GHz. The amplifier is designed for an operating-temperature range of -40 to +105°C.
