A new study commissioned by the Software Defined Radio (SDR) Forum predicts that SDR technology will play a major role in the growth of broadband wireless access (BWA) markets. The 52-page study, "Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and Beyond 3G/4G," provides a comprehensive look at BWA market opportunities. The report augurs multiple radio standards, such as GPS, GSM cellular, and WiMAX, existing within a single mobile or infrastructure unit. The solution to simultaneous operation is the use of SDR technology for addressing different waveform selection as well as simultaneous operation of different standards. The study points to advanced in semiconductor, RF, and data-acquisition technologies as enablers for the growth of SDR technology.
