To Exhibit in Hawaii?

Attendance was sparse but spirited at the first annual IEEE Radio &
Wireless Symposium and Exhibition (San Diego, CA, January 17-19,
2006). Technical presentations covered a wide range of topics,
including algorithms for wireless communications, but focused largely
on radio-frequency integrated circuits (RFICs). Several exhibitors
showed significant new product developments, including Keithley
Instruments ( http://news.mwrf.com/t?ctl=1FD3A:49027F ) with a
microwave power meter, vector signal generator, and vector signal
analyzer (although the products will not be ready for official launch
until an approximate June timeframe). Freescale Semiconductor
( http://news.mwrf.com/t?ctl=1FD39:49027F ) indicated they were
ready to compete in the WiMAX infrastructure market with a high-power
device targeted at 3.5-GHz applications. Eudyna Devices
( http://news.mwrf.com/t?ctl=1FD3E:49027F ) offered several high-power
production transistors based on gallium-nitride (GaN) technology.
And Skyworks Solutions ( http://news.mwrf.com/t?ctl=1FD35:49027F )
launched a line of lead-free CMOS switches for satellite-communications
(satcom) receiver applications.

Much of the talk on the show floor, however, was not about San
Diego, but about Hawaii--the site of the 2007 mid-year IEEE Microwave
Theory & Techniques Symposium (MTT-S). Amidst the grumbling about
Honolulu being a poor location to find customers, exhibitors were
weighing the benefits of partaking in that show versus returning to
the IEEE Radio & Wireless Symposium and Exhibition in 2007. To many,
Hawaii seemed too far off "the beaten path" to serve as a site for a
show. Your thoughts? Contact me at mailto:jbrowne@penton.com with a
yeah or a nay on Hawaii.

Fujitsu and Aperto Team on WiMAX End-Product

With Fujitsu Microelectronics America supplying the model MB87M3400
WiMAX system on a chip (SoC) and Aperto Networks developing the end
product, a PacketMAX 500 base station, one of the first WiMAX Forum
Certified products was born. "We are proud to see Aperto Networks'
PacketMAX 5000 on the initial list of WiMAX Forum Certified
products," said Keith Horn, senior vice-president of sales and
marketing for Fujitsu. The first round of WiMAX Forum Certified
products has been developed according to the WiMAX Forum defined
certification profile for a 3.5-GHz system, which is based on the
IEEE 802.16-2004 and ETSI HiperMAN standards.

Elcom Aims at Wireless LAN Testing

Frequency synthesizer supplier Elcom Technologies has developed the
IBS series of rack-mount sources for wireless local area network
(WLAN) and cellular semiconductor testing as part of larger
automatic-test-equipment (ATE) systems. The synthesizer operates
from 100 MHz to 20 GHz with frequency steps as small as 1 Hz and +10
dBm output power. Switching speed is less than 100 microseconds to
settle within 1 rad of a new frequency setting's phase. The phase
noise is -90 dBc/Hz offset 100 Hz from the carrier and -125 dBc/Hz
offset 1 MHz from the carrier. Options include amplitude and pulse
modulation.

TestMart Owner Reports Record 2005 Sales

Technical Communities, Inc., owner and operator of such websites as
www.testmart.com and www.testmartdirect.com, announced record
results for 2005. The privately held company reported that growth
came from strong test and measurement and IT equipment sales as well
as increased service revenue, with equipment bookings growing by
more than 72 percent and shipments growing over 100 percent compared
to the previous year. Operating expenses fell by 42 percent while
net income doubled, growing 100.8 percent over 2004.

Besser Launches WiMAX and OFDM Courses

Educational specialist Besser Associates has developed a new course
on mobile wireless data, "Wireless Data Systems Made Simple: WiFi,
WiMAX, 3G, and More." Modeled after the company's successful "RF and
Wireless Made Simple" course, the new class reviews the strengths and
weaknesses of various data systems and how they are related to each
other. Taught by Al Scott, the two-day class is scheduled for
March 6-7 in Sunnyvale, CA. Besser Associates has also created the
course "Multi-Carrier Modulation: Applications of OFDM in ADSL and
Wireless LAN" for those needing a fundamental review of orthogonal
frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) technology and how it is being
used to increase bandwidth efficiency in WiMAX and 3G cellular
systems. The course is presented by Burton Saltzburg and Ahmad Bahai.

Eudyna Unveils High-Power GaN HEMTs

Eudyna Devices USA showed several production gallium-nitride (GaN)
power transistors at the recent IEEE Radio & Wireless Symposium and
Exhibition. The high-electron-mobility-transistor (HEMT) devices
include 30-, 90-, and a pair of 180-W parts for high-voltage
applications using the wide-bandgap semiconductor materials. For
example, model ES/EGN35A180IV is a flange-mount-packaged transistor
capable of 180-W output power with 50-percent power-added efficiency
and 12-dB linear gain at 3.5 GHz. The device is designed for a
drain-source voltage of 50 V and is ideal for broadband L-band power
amplifiers.
