WiMAX: Bigger Than Cellular?

Commercial wireless equipment suppliers have slouched through
several lean years of flat orders and uncertain opportunities after
the boom years of the mid-to-late 1990's. But WiMAX threatens to
change all that. Viewed by many as a wireless solution to the
broadband "last mile" to the home and small office, WiMAX networks
(IEEE 802.16 for fixed and portable and IEEE 802.20 for mobile)
promise data rates over 100 Mb/s, opening wireless pipelines for
dense data, video, and other "bit-intensive" applications.

This and future columns will examine the role of high-frequency
engineering companies to bring WiMAX to the masses. Altera

developed over a dozen wireless reference designs using their
field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA) devices. Altera's Arun Iyengar,
senior director of the company's wireless business unit, reinforced
the company's interest particularly in the WiMAX infrastructure, as
well as in WLAN and cellular systems. The firm's approach is simple:
keep cost low, meet customers' performance requirements, and help
speed the time to market with reference designs and partnerships

QUALCOMM Acquires Berkana Wireless

QUALCOMM (San Diego, CA), perhaps best known for their 3G CDMA
telephones, has added fabless semiconductor company Berkana Wireless
(Campbell, CA) to their stockpile of technology. Berkana Wireless,
perhaps best known for their BKW9000 single-chip quad-band
(GSM/GPRS/DCS/PCS) RF CMOS cellular transceivers, brings a wealth of
expertise on multimode transceiver design to a company already
strong in wireless analog and digital circuit design. Berkana
Wireless was acquired for approximately $56 million in cash.

Rogers Launches "Green" Materials Site

Materials specialist Rogers Corp. (Rogers, CT) will be highlighting
its new "Green Leader" web site at the upcoming IPC Printed Circuits
Expo (February 8-10, 2006, Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, CA).
The site contains details on the company's environmentally friendly
product offerings, including RO4000 thermoset laminate materials,
R/flex CRYSTAL flexible circuit materials, and the company's
signature RT/duroid microwave laminate materials for applications
past 90 GHz.

VCOs Boast Broadband Tuning

Synergy Microwave (Paterson, NJ) has developed a line of extremely
broadband voltage-controlled oscillators in surface-mount packages.
The oscillator line includes model DCFO35105-5 that tunes from 350
to 1050 MHz and model DCMO100230-12 that tunes from 1000 to 2300
MHz. The former exhibits typical phase noise of -112 dBc/Hz offset
10 kHz from the carrier, while the latter has typical phase noise of
-101 dBc/Hz offset 10 kHz from the carrier. Well suited for wireless
applications such as cellular radios and wireless local area
networks (WLANs), the oscillators feature patent-pending REL-PRO
packaging technology for high-yield, reliable electrical contacts.

GaAs FETs Drop To New Noise Lows

Device supplier California Eastern Laboratories (Santa Clara, CA)
has announced the availability of two new GaAs heterojunction
field-effect transistors (HJ-FETs) with among the lowest device
noise figures in the industry. Model NE3509M04 features a 0.35-dB
noise figure with 16.3 dB associated gain at 2.4 GHz (running on 10
mA and +2 VDC). Model NE3508M04 provides a 0.41-dB noise figure and
14-dB associated gain at 2.4 GHz. Both transistors are supplied in
lead-free four-pin, flat-lead packages.

Adapter Kit Supports 40-GHz Connections

A coaxial adapter kit has been developed by Electronika
International (Cleveland, OH) with standard and reverse-polarity
components to make quick inter-connections between many different
connector types, including BNC, TNC, SMA, Type N, MMCX, UHF, and
even RCA audio connectors. Made of brass and stainless steel with
gold-plated electrical contacts, the kit is supplied with a total of
40 adapters. The firm offers high-precision adapters usable at
frequencies through 40 GHz.

Combiner Handles 750 W CW at 1 GHz

Innovative Power Products has introduced their model IPP-1000
four-way power combiner, capable of 750 W CW total output power from
400 to 1000 MHz. Supplied with TNC female input connectors and a
female SC output connector, the combiner measures 8.52 by 3.27 by
1.37 in. with less than 0.4 dB insertion loss and better than 1.30:1

New Company Makes Noise

NoiseWave Corp. (East Hanover, NJ) has surfaced as a new supplier of
precision noise-based instruments and noise sources. The firm
recently announced their model NW301 surface-mount noise diode for
applications from 10 MHz to 3.5 GHz. The device provides typical
effective noise ratio (ENR) of at least 32 dB and typically 35 dB
for test and communications applications.
