Dual-Use Technology Coming Full Circle

Consumers often don't realize it, but many of their electronic
conveniences started life somewhere in a military research laboratory.
Years back, that arm of the US Department of Defense (DoD) tasked with
coordinating research on future technologies, the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA, www.darpa.mil), felt that in fairness
to taxpayers, some of this research on military technologies should
also provide some commercial benefits. The concept of "dual-use"
technology was born, resulting in many of the tools taken for granted
by consumers, including Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers,
cell phones, and even spread-spectrum cordless phones.

With Nokia now working with the US Army on wireless networking
protocols (see story below), dual-use technology takes on another
meaning. This represents a version of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)
thinking, on how to apply proven commercial technologies, such as
WCDMA, WiMAX, and GSM, to military applications. The five-year
arrangement will have Nokia studying commercial devices and
communications technologies to see what fits for the Army. In the end,
both commercial and military users of the technologies can only
benefit from the improvements that result.

Driver amplifier spans 2 to 35 GHz

Broadband enough for most communications and military applications,
model HMC-C038 is a distributed driver amplifier with 12 dB gain from
2 to 35 GHz. Supplied in a hermetic package with replaceable 2.92-mm
coaxial connectors, the GaAs amplifier features +18 dBm output power
at 1-dB compression with third-order intercept point of +29 dBm. The
gain flatness is within 1 dB from 2 to 16 GHz and the midband noise
figure is a mere 4 dB. The amplifier has integrated voltage regulation
and internal bias sequencing circuitry to ensure proper powering up of
the negative and positive voltage supplies. The compact amplifier is
specified for operating from -55 to +85C.

Keithley Teams With Mesatronic Group

Keithley Instruments has partnered with the French Mesatronic Group to
develop probe cards for semiconductor parametric testing at RF and for
low-current DC applications. The new probe cards will work with
Keithley parametric testers for simultaneous on-wafer RF and low-level
DC testing on any combination of probe pins. The new probe card design
will allow higher test throughput since both RF and DC tests can be
made with a single wafer insertion. A key to the new probe card is a
spatial transformer that interfaces the probe card with a flexible
membrane circuit structure in the center of the wafer prober where the
probe contact needles are attached.

Software Tools Add Constructively

Version 7.5 of the MicroStripes three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic
(EM) simulation software from Flomerics is designed to integrate
seamlessly with Microwave Office(R) circuit design software from
Applied Wave Research. It operates as a plug-in to Microwave Office,
adding full-wave EM simulation to the circuit simulator. The latest
version of MicroStripes can import any excitation waveform during the
modeling process, run the simulation, and evaluate the results without
additional post-processing. The new version also allows ground planes
to be used for models without meshing all of the space between the
system and ground plane.

G. T. Microwave Launches I/Q Modulator

Designed for applications from 18.0 to 21.5 GHz, model M2V-82N-5JX is
a high-dynamic-range in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) vector modulator with
360-deg. control for generating complex digital modulation in
communications systems. Based on PIN diodes, the compact unit boasts
switching speed o 350 ns. It has a 50-dB dynamic range and achieves
simultaneous phase and amplitude control. The phase is accurate to
+/-10 deg. while the amplitude is flat within +/-0.75 dB. It can
handle input levels to +15 dBm CW, and 1 W maximum on peaks. VSWR is
better than 1.80:1. The modulator is designed for +/- 15-VDC supplies
and measures 3.25 x 3.00 x 1.00 inches.

CSR Shows Strong Third Quarter Results

CSR reported strong growth in its unaudited third-quarter 2006
results. Quarterly revenues were up 32 percent to $214.1 million with
operating profit up 14 percent to $51 million compared to the third
quarter of 2005. The firm continued to grow its share of the Bluetooth
market, with one-half of all GSM cellular handset design wins and 94
percent of all hands-free headset design wins. The company also
launched its UniVox VoWiFi phone reference design, demonstrating a
broadening of its non-Bluetooth portfolio and supporting its UniFi
single-chip Wi-Fi offering. The firm earned wins in the automotive
market with GPS systems from TomTom and Garmin and handsfree kits for
customers like Sony Ericsson, Nokia and Continental.

US Army Reaches For Nokia Phones

Cellular telephone specialist Nokia has entered into a Cooperative
Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the US Army to
evaluate Nokia technology in the areas of PCS, WCDMA 3G, GSM, WiMAX,
and advanced wireless networking protocols for potential military and
defense applications. The CRADA is with the Army's Research,
Development, and Engineering Command, Communications-Electronics
Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC). The project
will include testing, demonstrations, experiments, and information
exchange beginning in the fourth quarter of 2006 and lasting for five
years. According to Bob Fennelly, Nokia's Director of Government
Systems and Networks, "This arrangement will help the Army's efforts
to evaluate commercial technology for government applications and will
greatly increase Nokia's capabilities to provide its advanced
technologies to large U.S. government communications projects."
