Just What Do We Do?

Dinner the other night with a friend, who just happens to run a
microwave components and waveguide company, included a conversation on
the large-scale outsourcing taking place in consumer electronics. Few
consumer-level goods are NOT being manufactured in places like China
and Indonesia, and even commercial and professional-level electronic
equipment is being outsourced by US-based companies. My friend added
that even some service calls now, such as a call for technical
assistance from Dell Computer, is answered by a contractor in India.

Because of their strong ties to military markets, many US-based
microwave companies still rely on in-house design and manufacturing,
although firms dealing with high-volume commercial markets must
outsource their production to remain competitive. With so much of
electronics moving offshore, the inevitable question becomes "just
what do we do?" When many of the essential functions of a company have
been contracted, what remains to differentiate that company? An image?
Peronalities? Intellectual property? It is a question that begs
discussion and I invite readers to send their comments to
mailto:jbrowne@penton.com.

ISL Receives SBIR Contract for Collision Avoidance

Information Systems Laboratories (ISL) has been awarded a Phase 2
Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract to develop and test
Electric (E) field sensors and signal processing algorithms for
submarine collision-avoidance systems. The period of performance for
the ECAS contracts is four years with a total value, including
options, of over $1 million US. Under the contract, ISL will install a
set of Hydrodynamic E-field Sensors (HES) on a submarine and conduct
testing and data collection to validate the performance
characteristics of these sensors in an at sea environment and then
develop workable noise-reduction algorithms to detect and track
potential collision threats. According to Tom Teters, ISL's Vice
President of Corporate Development, "Our in-house experience in
Electric Field sensor and processing technology will enable us to
produce superior results for the Navy and keep our submarine crews
safe by reducing the risk of colliding with other vessels in
acoustically unfriendly environments."

Modelithics Forges New DLI Cap Models

Modelithics has announced completion of the first phase of
substrate-scalable models for the Opti-cap, Milli-cap, Ultra High-Q,
and other surface-mounted capacitors from Dielectric Laboratories,
Inc. (DLI). Modelithics is now distributing free S-parameters for the
components from its Web site. According to DLI President Brian DuPell,
the new models are a boon to designers: "For new microwave product
designs to include our growing stable of unique products, engineers
increasingly are demanding models that accurately predict how our
components will perform in their circuits. Modelithics has unique
technology that allows designs to be as accurate and predictable as
possible, so that designers know exactly what they will get when they
choose DLI components." Larry Dunleavy, President of Modelithics, adds
that "We're pleased to see that DLI recognizes the growing trend that
RF engineers are learning to rely more and more upon simulations to
shorten their design cycles."

Keithley Offers Free I-V Testing Guide

Test-equipment supplier Keithley Instruments is offering a free
applications guide "I-V Testing for Components and Semiconductor
Devices" to aid engineers with critical current and voltage
measurements. The applications guide contains 11 application notes on
topics ranging from multipin integrated-circuit (IC) testing to DC
characterization of RF transistors. For a free copy of the application
guide, call Keithley at (800) 492-1955 or visit the link below.

Honeywell and Rockwell Team on Guided Weapons

Rockwell Collins and Honeywell have announced a 50/50 joint venture to
develop a new series of integrated solutions for precision guided
weapons. The limited liability company (LLC), which will be known as
Integrated Guidance Systems LLC, will incorporate
microelectromechanical-systems (MEMS) and Global Position System (GPS)
technologies into their systems to achieve high levels of positioning
accuracy. While offering a new integrated series of guidance products,
both Honeywell and Rockwell Collins will continue to offer their
existing MEMS and GPS products that are used on current precision
weapons. "Rockwell Collins' GPS receivers and Honeywell's MEMS
Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) are complementary technologies that
will deliver very small, low-cost, highly precise guided weapons
systems," said Ron Hornish, Vice President and General Manager of
Sensor Systems for Rockwell Collins.  "Each company is applying
research and development efforts to integrate these two technologies
in order to produce a superior total solution." New guidance offerings
will be made possible through the combination of Rockwell Collins'
military GPS receiver technology and Honeywell's MEMS IMU and
navigation processing technologies using an advanced coupling process
called Deep Integration that increases navigation accuracy in GPS
jammed or denied environments.

EPX Launches Miniature Satcom Amplifiers

EPX Microwave has added to their lines of solid-state amplifiers with
two modular units for communications applications such as satellite
communications terminals and terrestrial radios. Model C1501 provides
at least 10 dB gain from 11 to 15 GHz with +20 dBm output power at
1-dB compression. It has a noise figure of 4 dB. Model C1502 achieves
at least 20 dB gain from 11 to 15 GHz with +20 dBm output power and 4
dB noise figure. Both of the 50-ohm amplifiers operate from +5 VDC.

Cambridge Silicon Radio Sets Record Quarter

Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) reported record results for its
third-quarter 2005 earnings. The outstanding results reflect the
company's strengthened leadership in the Bluetooth silicon market,
with design wins in Kyocera, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Philips, Samsung,
Siemens, and Sony. The firm enjoyed a 109-percent increase in revenue
to $1.62 million US and an increase in operating profit of 150 percent
to $44.7 million US. CSR's CEO, John Hodgson, commented, "We are
delighted to have delivered record revenue, operating profit and
operating cash flow, all of which have more than doubled compared to
the same quarter last year."
