A line of surface-mount frequency synthesizers from EM Research has been developed for very-small-aperture-terminal (VSAT) applications. The series of models includes units covering 950 to 1450 MHz, 950 to 1750 MHz, 950 to 2150 MHz, and 13.05 GHz. As an example, model HFS-2150-XX operates from 950 to 2150 MHz with 200-kHz steps and +7 dBm output power. It works with a 10-MHz reference source to achieve phase noise of -85 dBc/Hz offset 10 kHz from the carrier and -110 dBc/Hz offset 100 kHz from the carrier. This synthesizer runs from less than 150 mA at +5 VDC and exhibits -55 dBc spurious content and -15 dBc harmonics. It measures a mere 1.25 x 1.00 x 0.25 in.
