Viewpoint *************** When Legends Are Born The August issue of parent magazine Microwaves & RF carried the first installment of the Microwave Legends, listing 45 people, places, and things that have had an impact on the RF/microwave industry. First off, apologies to anyone who felt slighted by the list, thinking they should have been included. It was not meant as a popularity contest. The list was nominated by readers, and final voting was performed by readers. We editors did some "compiling," but little "steering." As with other "hall of fame" type endeavors, this one will have its "add ons" each year, as we seek to increase the initial list of 45 by another 5 noteworthy people, places, or things each year. One of the original nominees, for example, was the Anzac catalog. It was a classic in its time, and a true reference source in this industry for any engineer needing high-frequency components. So, don't feel slighted. Instead, get a head start on your nominations for 2007 by sending me your suggestions, to mailto:[email protected] JACK BROWNE Technical Director ************* 2. News ************* FreeWave Launches Spread-Spectrum Radio Modules FreeWave Technologies has developed a series of board-level spread-spectrum radios that operate in the 2.372 to 2.400 GHz range. Well suited for NATO and European allies, the secure frequency-hopping radio modules are ideal for original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM) applications. They feature a 32-b CRC for error-free communications, a 20-mile line-of-sight range, and 115.2-kb/s true data rate. The versatile radio modules can operate with voltages from 9.5 to 30 VDC. News ********* LXI PlugFest Features Real-World Testing Held this past July 25-27 in Cleveland, OH, the LXI Consortium's latest PlugFest featured more than 50 attendees and included real-world testing of products meeting Class A and Class B LXI requirements. Products for Class A include time synchronization via the IEEE 1588 precision time protocol as well as a hardware trigger bus. Sponsored by LXI member Keithley Instruments, all of the tested products are expected to receive certification shortly, bringing the total number of LXI-certified products to more than 150. The testing process also included interface bridges that enable integrators to create "hybrid" systems that utilize non-LXI equipment alongside LXI-compliant devices. This capability will help system creators leverage their existing investments - and expertise - in other architectures such as GPIB, VXI, and PXI. The next PlugFest, to be hosted by LXI member The MathWorks, is scheduled for October 17-19, 2006, in Boston, MA. News ********* TensorComm Files 75th Interference Cancellation Patent Spectral-efficiency specialist TensorComm announced the filing of their 75th patent related to interference cancellation, specifically for the application of their Interference Cancellation Technology (ICT) to networks deploying MIMO. The firm's ICT is designed to improve the performance and data throughput of 3G networks (CDMA2000/1xEV-DO and WCDMA/HSDPA) and is now positioned to apply the same types of benefits to emerging 4G networks. The receiver technology, which cancels interference from all traffic channels and interfering sources, operates with both base stations and mobile devices, and is suitable for single- and multiple-antenna receivers. News ********** DAC Synthesizes 1-GHz Bandwidth Maxim Integrated Products has developed a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) capable of 2.3-GSamples/s, 12-b performance. Model MAX19692 can directly synthesize signals with as much as 1 GHz bandwidth at frequencies from DC to 2 GHz. The DAC features a -68 dBc spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) at 1.2 GHz. The device operates from 3.3 and 1.8 V supplies while consuming only 950 mW power. It is supplied in a 11 x 11 mm 169-CSBGA package. News ********* Instruments Add Data Streaming To RF Measurements National Instruments has introduced a new RF vector signal analyzer and two intermediate-frequency (IF) digitizers that support continuous streaming of high-bandwidth RF test data across high-speed buses, such as PCI and PXI, directly to a personal computer (PC). The model PXI-5661 2.7-GHz vector signal analyzer offers a 20-MHz instantaneous modulation bandwidth and built-in burst trigger. The NI 5142 IF digitizers are available in PXI or PCI format, each with two 14-b, 100-MSamples/s channels. According to Tim Dehne, NI senior vice president of engineering, "These new RF and IF products represent a shift in the way communications systems are designed and tested," said "By streaming RF or IF data across high-speed buses directly to a PC for processing, the challenge of developing a communications system now falls on software." The company also supplies LabVIEW software for analysis. National Instruments ---> http://news.mwrf.com/t?ctl=361C6:49027F ********* 7. News ********* Keithley Offers Remote-Testing Training Course Keithley Instruments is offering a two-day course on September 14 and 15, 2006 in Cleveland, OH on the use of National Instruments' LabVIEW software for remote control of multiple-vendor test instruments, "Optimizing Remote Control of Instruments in a LabVIEW(R) Environment." Attendees will learn how to assemble and configure instruments from a variety of vendors into an efficient test setup and control all of them from a single software interface. The course, which is not intended for production testing, consists predominantly of practical exercises in a lab setting, plus short lectures on a variety of related topics.
