Viewpoint *************** Bringing UWB To The Masses Ultrawideband (UWB) technology is yet another military communications technique that is working its way to commercial applications. Based on time-sequenced pulsed signals at low power levels, UWB promises to provide many times the bandwidth of even the highest-frequency wireless local area networks (WLANs) over similar distances. For that reason, some companies have eyed the technology as a viable candidate for wireless home networking involving video signals. One of these video-UWB pioneers is FOCUS Enhancements (Campbell, CA). And the company has done more than just tout its radio solutions. It has assembled a full evaluation kit (see the story below) to help commercial and consumer-electronics designers to test their UWB radios in typical home and office environments. As Brett Moyer, the firm's President and CEO relates, FOCUS wants manufacturers to test and confirm that their UWB radios work in a wide range of environments. The evaluation kit is a boon to companies considering UWB for their products and a tremendous push for this fledgling technology. JACK BROWNE Technical Director ************* 2. News ************* Digital Fountain Licenses FEC Technology To Nokia Digital Fountain (Fremont, CA) has licensed its patented DF Raptor forward-error-correction (FEC) technology to Nokia for the cell-phone maker's next-generation cellular handsets. The DF Raptor technology supports efficient delivery of multimedia data streams or large data files over wireless networks even with the occurrence of high packet loss. The technology minimizes processing requirements and transmission bandwidth while providing tremendous flexibility in the face of lost packets. A version of DF Raptor was recently selected by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for 3G high-speed wireless networks, and is part of the first release of the Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) standards. News ********* ARRL Asks FCC To Shut Down Manassas BPL System Last issue, it was reported that Manassas, VA had gone to a full-scale broadband over powerline (BPL) communications system for high-speed internet access over power lines. In response to the full-scale deployment of the system, and the effects of its interference on other radio systems, the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) has asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to instruct the city to shut down the system. Communications Technologies (COMTek) operates the system for the city over the municipally owned electric power grid. ARRL cites the system as a source of harmful interference for amateur radio operators and "is not compliant with applicable FCC Part 15 regulations" according to the ARRL's 16-page filing with the FCC. A copy of the ARRL's filing with the FCC is available on the ARRL web site at http://news.mwrf.com/t?ctl=172C4:49027F ARRL ---> http://news.mwrf.com/t?ctl=172D6:49027F COMTek ---> http://news.mwrf.com/t?ctl=172C8:49027F FCC ---> http://news.mwrf.com/t?ctl=172D9:49027F ********* 4. News ********* Keithley Expands Presence in Southeast Asia Test and measurement specialist Keithley Instruments has announced significant expansions in Southeast Asia with an office expansionin Singapore and the opening of two new offices in Malaysia for direct sales and support of its electrical test and measurement solutions. Of the expansion, the company's Chairman, President, and CEO, Joseph Keithley noted "It will allow us to provide our customers in these emerging markets with even faster, more effective sales applications assistance." More than 50 percent of the firm's sales come from outside the United States. The company maintains branch sales offices in 15 countries and also has sales representatives in more than 76 countries around the world. News ********** FOCUS Enhancements Launches UWB Evaluation System Video specialist FOCUS Enhancements (Campbell, CA) has introduced the Talaria Ultrawideband (UWB) Evaluation System for computer, mobile communications and consumer electronics companies designing next generation UWB-based wireless audio/video products. The system includes all elements needed to test UWB radio performance in typical home and office user environments, and can be used to validate the performance of FOCUS Enhancements' UWB radio modules in real-world environments. Talaria is expected to provide transmission rates to 880 Mb/s at ranges to 8 m and 37 Mb/s at a range of 40 m. "For UWB to become a viable technology in commercial markets, it must prove that it can work in a variety of commonly encountered environments," said Brett Moyer, FOCUS Enhancements' president and chief executive officer. The evaluation system contains two PCI slots, which house a mini-PCI Talaria UWB radio module and a FOCUS Enhancements Gemini MPEG decoder card. It provides IEEE-1394, component video, composite video, VGA and DVI video outputs and S/PDIF digital audio outputs.
