Giga-tronics Supplies YIG Filters for Radar

Giga-tronics has received a $4.9 million order for tunable YIG filters by a major defense contractor for a radar system application.

Giga-tronics has received a $4.9 million order for YIG-tuned filters by a major aerospace subcontractor. The filter products, which will be used in radar systems, are expected to begin shipping during the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2018, with the bulk of the shipments to take place during the succeeding 9-to-12 month period.

“We are pleased to continue to supply and service our customer needs in the high performance radar filter marketplace as they continue to upgrade their aircraft,” said Suresh Nair, the company’s CEO. “As the sole source supplier of certain components within the high-performance radar, we expect to continue our recent progress, addressing a market exceeding $30 million over the next few years.”

Yttrium indium garnet (YIG) spheres are used to form RF/microwave filters and resonators for frequency synthesizers (see photo). By maintaining the spheres within a magnetic field, the resonant frequency of the spheres can be changed by adjusting the amount of current being fed to the magnetic field. Nair noted that, in spite of some other business delays during this quarter, “we are pleased with the receipt of the $4.9 million order for the radar filters, and are gratified that our customer continues to trust and select us to provide their radar filters.”
