WiMAX Edges Closer To Real Market

Broadband wireless applications under the WiMAX umbrella may be just
around the corner, or they may never come, but most market-research
specialists are calling this the "next cellular" portion of the
wireless marketplace. For some applications, such as broadband
wireless Internet access or wireless connectivity throughout the
home or small office, WiMAX offers many practical benefits,
including ease of installation and generous bandwidth.

If Fujitsu has anything to say about it, WiMAX markets will grow in
leaps and bounds. The company has been fiercely devoted to the
growth of WiMAX markets and has done as much as any device supplier
to establish itself as a major player in a WiMAX future. Fujitsu
( http://news.mwrf.com/t?ctl=2824E:49027F ) offers a system-on-a-chip (SoC)
with all WiMAX baseband processing on board as well as a reference
design to help customers speed their own products. And, as the news
item below notes, Fujitsu presented a united front at this week's
Broadband Wireless World 2006 show in Las Vegas.

Fujitsu Furthers WiMAX at BWW 2006

Fujitsu Microelectronics America and five customer partners have
combined for a strong WiMAX front at this week's Broadband Wireless
World 2006 (April 26-27, 2006, Las Vegas, NV). Fujitsu is exhibiting
its WiMAX reference design for WiMAX base station and subscriber
stations based on the company's model MB87M3400 system-on-a-chip
(SoC) design. Customer partners, including Air Broadband, Aperto
Networks, and MiTAC, will show a variety of base-station and
subscribre station solutions based on the Fujitsu SoC. Fujitsu's
Makoto ("Mac") Awaga and Keith Horn also planned to make a keynote
presentation at BWW of a talk entitled "Communications On-The-Go:
New Business Opportunities in the Broadband Wireless Era."

National Adds PXI/SCXI Microwave Switch Modules

National Instruments has added several PXI and SCXI microwave
multiplexing switch modules to its portfolio of modular PXI
instruments. The firm's PXI-2595 and SCXI-1195 5-GHz switches and
the PXI-2594 and SCXI-1194 2.5-GHz switches are ideal for accurate
RF signal routing in telecommunications, military/aerospace and
automated test applications. When combined with the company's
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Switch Mainframes, these PXI and SCXI
switches form a cost-effective, plug-and-play solution that easily
integrates with external RF equipment and takes advantage of the
flexibility and ease of use of USB.

Test Set Checks Vehicle-Based Systems

Aeroflex has launched its model 3500 radio test set aimed at
vehicle-based radio systems used predominantly by first responders.
The light and portable model 3500 radio test set operates from 2 MHz
to 1 GHz and can measure power levels to 200 W with an external
attenuator. It performs a wide variety of AM/FM transmitter and
receiver tests including RF power, RF frequency error, AM
modulation, FM deviation, Receive Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI),
distortion and SINAD/sensitivity, and can even find faults in
antenna connections. According to Rob Barden, Director of Product
Marketing for Aeroflex, the "3500 is the most comprehensive
vehicular test system available and meets the needs of a variety of
radio vehicle tests and commercial radio applications." The test set
is priced starting at $14,995 USD.
