1.  Viewpoint
Serving Something Special For The Military

Much like its parent magazine, Microwaves & RF, this newsletter is a
blend of commercial and military applications and technologies, with
the occasional touch of automotive, medical, and industrial topics.
From time to time, the newsletter covers major news of interest to
the military, such as the Wesley Bush promotion at Northrop Grumman.
For those interested only in military, however, this is not the best
place for news.

As I right this (with one hand), I am also working on that optimum
source for military electronics news, a digital magazine known
simply as Penton's Military Electronics. It also covers the Bush
story, but in greater detail. And it covers stories on synthesizers,
robotics, FPGAs, and all things electronics that might be of
interest to specifiers and design engineers working for military
customers. If you are in that market, and haven't seen a copy, I
invite you to sign up for a copy on the magazine web site, at
www.mwrf.com. You'll thank me for it. Happy reading.

NoiseWave Develops Amplified DIP Noise Source

Noise specialist NoiseWave has announced the immediate availability
of the new NoiseWave NW3G-D-14 dual-ln-line-packaged (DIP) amplified
noise source. Ideal for wireless PCD-mounted applications, the
amplified noise source covers 10 MHz to 3 GHz with -10-dBm output
power and noise flatness of +/- 2.5 dB or better. Standard operation
is from +15 VDC with maximum current draw of 100 mA. Applications
for the NW3G-D-14 include wireless test equipment, dithering for
increased dynamic range of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs),
jamming, and as an economical built-in source of broadband power.

Quad Modulator Simplifies GSM/CDMA2000 Design

Linear Technology has announced the availability of their model
LT5558 quadrature modulator, optimized for direct conversion from
baseband to the 850-to-965-MHz band. It is suitable for GSM, EDGE,
CDMA2000 basestations and 900-MHz RFID readers. The LT5558's
in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) baseband inputs offer high impedance
and a common-mode voltage of 2.1 V, allowing high input signal drive
levels and convenient baseband coupling to active filters. It has an
output third-order intercept point of +22.4 dBm and output
second-order intercept point of +65 dBm at 900 MHz with a noise
floor of -158 dBm/Hz for outstanding linearity with
wide-dynamic-range signals. The LT5558 is offered in a 16-pin 4 x 4
mm surface-mount QFN package. Pricing starts at $5.35 each in
1,000-piece quantities and is available immediately from stock.

Aeroflex and Etherstack Team On P25 Testing

Test-equipment supplier Aeroflex and Etherstack, a firm associated
with their development of software-defined-radio (SDR) waveforms,
have agreed to jointly develop and market a suite of products to
support Project 25 (P25) protocol conformance testing. The new
products will help ensure mobile stations and base stations conform
to the APCO Project 25 family of standards and bulletins published
by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). The suite,
which will consist of applications software developed by Etherstack
to run on a personal computer and the Aeroflex 3900 radio test set,
will have the capability of performing base station emulation for
protocol testing mobile stations, mobile station emulation for the
protocol testing of base stations and synchronized inbound and
outbound off-air protocol analyzers.

IEDM's Paper Abstract Deadline Looms Near

One of the premiere technical conferences, the IEEE International
Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM), held annually in December, has put
out its annual Call For Papers for the December event. The abstract
deadline is June 23rd for the upcoming 52nd Annual IEDM. The
conference presents more leading work in more areas of the field
than any other technical conference, encompassing silicon and
non-silicon device technology, optoelectronics, MEMS
(MicroElectroMechanical Systems), displays and nanotechnology for
electronics applications. It is scheduled this year for December
11-13, 2006 at the Hilton San Francisco and Towers (San Francisco, CA).

Northrop Grumman Board Names Bush President

Another Bush has become President. This time it is Wesley G. Bush,
previously corporate vice president and chief financial officer of
Northrop Grumman Corp., who was named today by that company's Board
of Directors to President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO). He will
continue to report to Ronald D. Sugar, the Chairman of the Board and
chief executive officer (CEO). Bush will retain his responsibilities
as CFO until a search for his successor in that post is completed
later this year. In his new role as President, Bush will assist the
CEO in overseeing the company's operations and will also play a key
role in its future strategic development. Current responsibilities
of Northrop Grumman's sector presidents and corporate staff officers
remain unchanged.

Book Review: RFID and Contactless Smart Card Applications

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) devices are now a mature
portion of the wireless landscape, but hardly a mature market.
Healthy growth for RFID tags and readers is predicted for a wide
range of areas, including chemical and pharmaceutical research,
retail, and even military equipment tracking and inventory. For
those interested in RFID, the text RFID and Contactless Smart Card
Applications by Dominique Paret provides a very readable
introduction to the design and development of RFID tags, including
their use as smart cards. The author, who works as Technical Support
Manager for Philips Semiconductors France, has worked on RFID
technologies from 125 kHz through 5.8 GHz for both commercial and
government applications. The 2005 hardcover book (ISBN: 13
978-0-470-01194-9) sells for $99.00 USD and is not for everyone. But
for readers interested in or currently planning an application for
RFID, this text will prove to be invaluable reading.
