Unleashing Microwaves In Munich
By Jack Browne, MWRF Technical Director

This week marked the 37th running of the European Microwave Conference (EuMC) held in Munich, Germany from October 8-12. The largest European event devoted to microwave electronics, the conference features a mix of technical presentations on components, systems, software, and measurement techniques, serving applications in automotive, defense, instrumentation, medical, radar, and telecommunications systems

The exhibition side of the event boasts a long list of high-frequency companies well represented by software, hardware, and test-equipment suppliers. The list includes US, European, and Far Eastern companies, with such notable names as Aeroflex, Agilent Technologies, Analog Devices, Emerson & Cuming, Anaren Microwave, Anritsu, Rogers, Rohde & Schwarz, and TriQuint Semiconductor. Many of these firms made major announcements during the week, some of those featured in this week's newsletter. If anything, the strong showing at the 37th EuMC signals the health of the high-frequency industry both here and in Europe, hopefully with continued good fortune throughout the remainder of this year into next year

Avago Announces UMTS Duplexers In Munich

Avago Technologies announced two miniature WCDMA duplexers at the European Microwave Conference in Munich, Germany this week. The company's models ACMD-7602 and ACMD- 7612 duplexers are optimized for use in band 1 data terminals and handsets for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) applications. Based on film-bulk-acoustic-resonator (FBAR) technology, the duplexers both feature 1.1-dB insertion loss in transmit and receive bands with interference-blocking capabilities exceeding 53 dB and more than 43 dB noise rejection, all in packages measuring less no bigger than 3.0 x 2.5 x 1,2 mm. Pricing for the miniature duplexers begins at $0.80 in high volumes. For more information, visit the Avago website.

Mimix Broadband Unveils MMIC Amp In Munich

Mimix Broadband introduced their model XP1031-QK four-stage GaAs MMIC power amplifier at this week's European Microwave Conference in Munich, Germany. The power amplifier, designed for applications from 37 to 42 GHz, delivers 23-dB small-signal gain with output third- order intercept point of +35 dBm. Supplied in a 7 x 7 mm, RoHS-compliant, surface-mount- technology (SMT) package, the compact amplifier is ideal for satellite-communications systems and point-to-point terrestrial microwave radios. According to Damian McCann, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Mimix Broadband, "Our latest design of a highly linear 38-GHz packaged power amplifier completes the transmit portion of a typical linear radio and, together with our integrated XR1008-QB receiver and XU1006-QB transmitter, forms the industry's first full SMT 38-GHz integrated chipset."
