Hardware-in-the-Loop Radar Test Enhances Autonomous-Driving Development
Rohde & Schwarz and IPG Automotive addressed automotive radar hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) integration testing to reduce the cost of autonomous-driving (AD) testing. Moving test from the proving ground to the development lab, the solution combines CarMaker simulation software from IPG Automotive with the R&S AREG800A radar object simulator and the R&S QAT100 advanced antenna array. This gives vehicle manufacturers the ability to simulate ADAS/AD scenarios in a controlled, safe, time-efficient, and cost-effective way.
The comprehensive radar sensor testing platform can be used for validation and real-time, closed-loop characterization of radar sensors, enabling compliance with Association for ASAM standards. Designed for development and end-to-end testing of cars and light commercial vehicles at all development stages from MIL/SIL to HIL and VIL, the open integration and test platform can implement virtual test scenarios for powertrain as well as vehicle dynamic chassis and ADAS/AD functions.
A high-resolution 3D engine allows the complete sensor stack to be simulated in very high detail. Integration into existing tool landscapes is done using various supported standards and interfaces.
The R&S AREG800A and the R&S QAT100 generate multiple artificial objects, each with independent range, radar cross section (RCS), angle (azimuth/elevation), and radial velocity. This creates a comprehensive test setup with the Open Simulation Interface (ASAM OSI) and R&S AREG800A with the CarMaker HIL test automation to create realistic driving scenarios for radar HIL testing.
A Scenario Editor greatly simplifies the process of testing maneuver-based driving scenarios, and an advanced Test Manager can build and run automated test sequences individually or simultaneously, locally or in the cloud. The Model Manager CarMaker helps to define the configuration of virtual vehicle prototypes, increasing realism and accuracy of simulations.
