Switchgear Equipment Supports Stealthy Submarines

Dec. 6, 2016
L-3 Communications and its L-3 SPD Electrical Systems (L-3 SPDES) group have received a U.S. Navy contract for switchgear equipment for the latest stealth submarines.

Electric power distribution and management is critical for naval vessels, particularly in submarines where reliability cannot be compromised. For that reason, the U.S. Navy recently awarded a contract to L-3 Communications and its L-3 SPD Electrical Systems (L-3 SPDES) business segment, located in Philadelphia, for switchgear equipment.

This equipment is intended for power distribution and protection on the Navy's latest submarine platforms, scheduled to replace Ohio-class submarines. The competitive contract includes design and qualification of the switchgear along with delivery of select units to the first submarine. Follow-on deliveries will extend to 2035 if the Navy builds all submarines that are currently part of the plan of record.

"This is an important contract for L-3 because it demonstrates our ability to meet evolving naval requirements with optimal reliability and performance," says Michael T. Strianese, L-3's chairman and CEO. Adds Christine Montalvo, president of L3 SPDES, "We've spent two years investing in conceptual designs and improving upon key elements—including electrical performance, weight, and reduced cost—and are excited to have won this rigorous competition."

L-3 SPDES is part of the Power & Propulsion Systems sector within the L-3's Electronic Systems business segment. The division currently manufactures switchgear and Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs) for Virginia-class fast-attack submarines.
