GaN-Based C-Band Radar Provides Real-Time Data

Aug. 15, 2013
A new radar that utilizes GaN technology has been successfully demonstrated to provide a powerful but cost-effective solution for military needs.

A demonstration has been completed of an expeditionary ground-based radar, which is based on C-band gallium nitride (GaN). Thanks to the combination of C-band and GaN, Raytheon's Three-Dimensional Expeditionary Long-Range Radar (3DELRR) solution enables warfighters to affordably detect, identify and track a wide variety of objects very accurately at great distances.

Designed to replace the old TPS-75 radar system, the 3DELRR solution was verified in front of US Air Force and Marine Corps. personnel. The exhibition showcased the radar tracking targets of opportunity and maneuvering tactical aircraft. It also showed the potential for integration into the Air Force’s next-generation Command and Control node.

The 3DELRR’s GaN base raises performance without increasing power consumption. Together with the solution’s open architecture, this aspect results in an affordable solution for defense against fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, missiles, and unmanned aircraft threats. It also provides a precise, real-time air picture, which is fully net-ready for maximum air-battle manager support.
