GaN Amplifier Module Boosts 2 to 8 GHz

July 31, 2024
This compact gallium-nitride PA provides at least 70-W CW output power from 2 to 8 GHz for high signal boosts from tight places.

Designed for high power at S- and C-band frequencies, the model AMP1146A compact amplifier module from Exodus Advanced Communications delivers at least 70-W continuous-wave (CW) output power from 2 to 8 GHz. Based on gallium-nitride (GaN) solid-state circuitry, the Class AB linear design features minimum power gain of 48 dB and is typically capable of 80- to 90-W saturated output power across the full frequency range.

Despite its small size of 4.3 × 7.8 × 1.0 in. and weight of 3 lbs., the power-amplifier (PA) module incorporates current and temperature sensing as well as built-in protection circuits for enhanced reliability.

The rugged GaN PA (see image above) exhibits two-tone intermodulation distortion (IMD) of typically –30 dBc with maximum spurious signal levels of –60 dBc. Harmonics are typically –15 dBc or better from 2 to 4 GHz and –20 dBc or better from 4 to 8 GHz. The PA handles operating temperatures from –20 to +70°C and draws 14 A current from a +32-V DC supply.

The miniature PA is equipped with numerous protection circuits for enhanced durability, including for overloads from input signal levels as high as +5 dBm and impedance load mismatches as severe as 3.0:1. With such high CW power from a small package, the PA is meant for use with an external heatsink and forced-air cooling. It's supplied with SMA female connectors.
