Wireless Modules Tout Speed, Latency, and Reliability

Nov. 25, 2024
SIMCom's RedCap wireless communication modules serve cost-conscious IoT applications where full 5G performance isn't required.

SIMCom recently launched a RedCap (reduced capability) wireless-communication module range for lower-cost IoT applications that don't require full 5G performance. The SIM8230 multi-band 5G NR/LTE-FDD/LTE-TDD module supports R17 5G SA, and offers a set of protocols and interfaces that include PCIe, USB2.0 and GPIO.

Delivering flexibility and integration, 5G RedCap serves applications that need the advantages of 5G but don't warrant the cost of full 5G. It also targets regions where a complete 5G network infrastructure isn't present.

The range of SIM8230 RedCap modules enable systems designers to get up and running quickly and easily, using the LGA + LCC form factor with various interfaces. The 30- × 30- × 2.5-mm modules are compatible with SIM7600/8200/8260 series devices, which also minimizes costs and shortens time to market.

SIM8230 modules deliver up to 220 Mb/s(DL)/100 Mb/s(UL) for sub-6-GHz SA, or 200 Mb/s(DL)/75 Mb/s(UL) for LTE. Available in different versions for use in  different regions, the modules address various IoT and M2M applications such as indoor CPE, MIFI, and industrial control.
